The 2024 return to the Molokai Hoe Canoe Race

NEWS DATE: FEBRUARY 1, 2024

To all past participants, crews, and canoe racing teams,

The Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA) is thrilled to announce the return of the Molokai Hoe canoe race on October 13, 2024. This historic race is a highlight of the canoe racing calendar and we cannot wait to welcome back paddlers from around the world.

While we have observed a four-year hiatus due to the impacts of COVID-19 and the Maui Fire, we have been working closely with the Molokai community to hold the race this year including a carefully planned return to the roots of Molokai Hoe. A key aspect of this plan involves more collaboration with Molokai residents for support services while also heeding some of the islands sensitivities concerning the scarcity of air travel with only one carrier and limited seats for residents. As such, we are asking all participants to leave the limited air travel resources for residents and travel to Molokai via Maui flights and Molokai Princess ferry or by boat from Oahu.

We recognize the impact this decision may have on participants, but we also understand the importance of respecting the needs of the Molokai community. We have been assured that transportation services to and from Maui and Oahu are readily available, and we are working closely with the Molokai community to ensure that all participants have access to the support services they need on island to start the race successfully.

We are excited to announce that residents of Molokai have offered to host crews in their homes and provide support with transportation and catering during the days leading up to the race. More details for support services on the island will be available on the Molokai Hoe website as we get closer to the race date.

We are committed to hosting the Molokai Hoe canoe race in a way that respects the community of Molokai and the environment. Once again, we ask that all participants respect our request to leave the limited air travel resources for residents and travel to Molokai via Maui or by boat from Oahu. Attached to this communication is the formal request for this action from State Senator Lynn Decoite on behalf of the Molokai community. Please take this request seriously.

We look forward to welcoming all participants to this historic race and to celebrating the strength, skill, and resilience of Hawaii's canoe paddlers.
